Professional school counselors face a variety of challenges arising from the increasing acuity of the needs of the populations they serve. As support staff, school counselors have a responsibility to address students’ academic, career, and social/emotional developmental needs. Being uniquely qualified in adhering to state and national ethical standards is essential. This presentation will address the responsibilities of being an ethically competent professional school counselor. Interactive opportunities for participants to engage in the ethical decision making process will be provided.
Participants will learn:
• To formulate their own positions on ethical issues. • Describe various school counselor roles and the potential for ethical dilemmas to arise. • Illustrate the multicultural perspective, and examine ethical and professional issues related to this perspective. • Develop the ability to think critically and creatively about ethical issues.
